15 forensic experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are taking part in the "Microscopy" workshop at the Institute of Mineralogy at TU Bergakademie Freiberg from 27 to 31 March.
In the process, the specialists from federal and state criminal investigation offices are deepening their knowledge of how soil samples can help to uncover criminal offences. Even the smallest traces of minerals and rocks found at crime scenes can provide important information for reconstructing the course of a crime. For example, the rocks reveal where people have been or whether adhering particles originate from the crime scene.
Knowledge of minerals and rocks and their deposits in Germany is therefore indispensable for the successful work of the experts.
The five-day course led by Prof Jens Götze from the Institute of Mineralogy will benefit from the Institute's first-class equipment in the field of microscopy technology. Using special microscopes, the experts learn, among other things, how samples smaller than one millimetre can be analysed. In addition to natural minerals and rocks, technical materials such as slag, glass, ceramics and building materials are also analysed.
