The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is already cooperating in research with universities in Chile; students and doctoral candidates take part in exchange and double doctoral programmes. In summer 2025, the Free State of Saxony opened a "Saxon Science Liaison Office" in Santiago de Chile. Now the links could become even closer: During a visit to TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Magdalena Atria, Ambassador of the Republic of Chile in Germany, informed herself about the research priorities of the resource university and spoke to Chilean students.
Fourteen young people from Chile are currently studying and completing their doctorates at Freiberg University as part of the existing collaborations with the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, the Universidad Catolica del Norte, the Universidad de Atacama and the Universidad de Magallanes. Around 80 Chileans are studying according to the Saxon Ministry of Science at all Saxon universities in total. Ambassador Atria's visit focussed on research collaboration on topics such as lithium extraction, bioleaching, green hydrogen and green methanol.
Guests from Chile can even expect their own guest house at TU Bergakademie Freiberg: in 2017, the Chile House in Freiberg city centre was handed over to the university by founder Dr Erika Krüger.
