In order to successfully switch to renewable energies, it is necessary to increase the efficiency of energy utilisation and tap into new energy sources. The utilisation of geothermal energy will play an increasingly important role in the future. The utilisation of renewable sources such as solar and wind energy requires the storage and underground storage of hydrogen, for example.

Both are typical issues for geoscientists. Students at our institute learn the basics for understanding the processes involved and the technologies for mastering the practical tasks.

This includes, for example:

  • Identifying and influencing the phenomena of the flow of liquids and gases in the pore space of rocks
  • Technological principles for the utilisation of the subsurface (e.g. measures for safe and environmentally friendly extraction, production and operation of underground caverns, etc.).
  • Use and development of suitable software to simulate complex fluidic processes underground

The "Geothermal flow, extraction and storage technology" working group deals with the exploration, extraction and development of various processes for the environmentally friendly utilisation of indigenous resources.

Storage technology, another specialist area of the working group, is the key to the effective use of renewable energies. Based on many years of experience, Germany has proven that it is a global technology leader in this field.

Assessing the integrity of boreholes and reservoirs is another important area of work.
