If I undertake responsibility for supervising a thesis, it would have to be with a research question regarding international resources policies and economic development. Currently, I am working on a research programme that is summarized on the page "Work in progress". This programme offers ample research avenues with a variety of different projects in International Business, in Natural Resource Eonomics, and in (new) Institutional Economics.

Additional topics of interest include

  • Ways to circumvent the resource-curse: concepts for a benign role of resources for economic development
  • Natural resource funds: using national resource wealth to improve conditions for economic development
  • Infrastructure for resources: the Chinese alternative to development aid and the procurement of natural resources
  • The role of foreign direct investments into extractive industries for economic development via technology transfer and spillovers
  • The global market for natural resources: economic implications of country and or firm-concentration
  • (including the economics of past or future export restraints of natural resources)
  • The economics of supply-interruptions/restrictions or supply-security for German/European industry with natural resources, needed for production, innovation, and growth
  • Towards a multilateral framework of supply and demand of natural resources
  • China's role in global value chains

Choosing to write your thesis within a progessing research programme has the advantage that your supervisor and fellow students are engaged in research on related topics, on a common research venture.

To give you an idea of what supervision will look like and to summarize some important hnits, se the OPAL-page Supervision by Johannes Stephan
