After two weeks of closure, terra mineralia will be welcoming visitors again from Saturday 17 January 2026. In the meantime, the ticket office and museum shop area has been given new lighting - and the team is introducing seven new offers for visitors to take part in and try out.
- Family tour "Join in!"
In addition to the very popular family tour "At night through the museum", which can only take place in the dark winter months, there will be a second family tour. It will always take place on the third Saturday of the month outside the school holidays. On this new public family tour "Join in!", visitors young and old will discover the fantastic world of minerals together. Games, little experiments and lots of fun await the curious visitors on the tour. Registration takes place at the information desk. The first tour starts on Saturday, 28 February 2026 at 14:30.
- Architectural tour
Visitors who are even more interested in the architecture of Freudenstein Castle can experience this on four public guided tours (each Wednesday at 14:30). Not only will the castle be scrutinised from the outside, but hidden doors will also be opened. Such as the rooms of the mountain archive, the oldest visible traces of the castle or the old castle courtyard. The first event takes place on Wednesday, 4 March at 14:30.
- "Understanding minerals"
People with visual impairments or complete blindness have been able to take advantage of the "Understanding minerals" offer for some time now. This involves the senses of hearing, smelling, tasting and, of course, touching. Now this offer will also be available as a public tour. It will take place once a quarter, the first date is Saturday, 14 March 2026 at 2:30 pm.
- "Whisky and the Rocks"
Terra mineralia is launching a new event together with Whiskymanufaktur Freiberg. With this whisky tasting, terra mineralia wants to draw attention to the storage of Freiberg whisky on the 1st level of the research and training mine of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
The evening begins with a 45-minute guided tour through the terra mineralia exhibition. Special attention will be paid to minerals from the continents and countries from which the whisky varieties will be tasted. Finally, the whisky tasting takes place in the treasure chamber. Here, visitors can not only taste the whiskies on offer, but also gain expert insights into raw materials, origin and blending.
This exclusive tour for adults aged 18 and over takes place at regular intervals and starts on Friday, 20 March 2026 at 5 pm.
- Digital offer "Ask the Studi"
New video tutorials have been created together with students from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which can be viewed both in the exhibition and from home. They are based on the most pressing questions that visitors have asked us over the past year. In addition to the six existing tutorials, five more are now being added. Among other things, the following questions will be answered: How do you find gold? How can you name a mineral yourself? Or why can minerals fluoresce? The new tutorials will be available from spring 2026.
- Offers for Czech guests
Thanks to the support of two Czech-speaking students, terra mineralia can now also offer guided tours for adults and schoolchildren from the Czech Republic. Thanks to the joint World Heritage title of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region, which also includes Freudenstein Castle, the TUBAF and the discovery of minerals from the Erzgebirge, terra mineralia is connected to its neighbouring country in a very special way. That is why, in addition to the English-language homepage and exhibition texts, Czech versions will now also be created by spring 2026. An audio guide is already available in Czech.
- Schlösserland App
An audio guide has been created in collaboration with Schlösserland Sachsen, which can be accessed via the "Schlösserland erleben" app. The history of Freudenstein Castle is vividly explained by Elector Augustus and his wife Electress Anna. Launch is Easter 2026.
