The programme is of great demand - and there is a lot of support: 60 experienced Freiberg students (Buddies) have agreed to help fellow international students get started in Freiberg for the current summer semester 2025. At the same time, TUBAF is already registering international students for the winter semester - and the International Office is still looking for potential buddies.

Buddy Programm

"Over 150 international students have already registered for the Buddy Programme for the coming semester and we are expecting even more demand!" says Marcus Dietrich, Buddy Programme Coordinator at the International Office. "For us, this is a clear confirmation of the success of the programme. Anyone who wants to be part of it mentor [at] iuz [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de (can get in touch) or register directly as a buddy."

For many of the international students, starting their studies in Germany is an exciting but also challenging time. The support provided by the buddies on their arrival in Freiberg, on their way into university life and their new home is of great importance to them: "The buddies commitment is essential for a successful start at TUBAF. At the end of their time as a buddy, the students receive an official certificate of participation," says Dietrich.

Networking and support also for buddies

Since this semester, the International Office has been offering regular meetings for the volunteer buddies: The volunteers have the opportunity to find out what's new in the programme and receive a small thank you for their commitment. "At the next meeting on campus, buddies can network, get to know each other and share their insights into the programme by exchanging experiences. Interested parties are also invited. The date will be announced in good time via the university info mail."

The Buddy Programme is a valuable contribution to the welcoming culture and integration at our university. It shows how community and solidarity are put into practice and makes a difference for many international students. The ongoing positive experiences in the programme and increasing numbers of participants give us confirmation and motivation to further expand the programme.
