Applied Geoscience
The international Master’s programme in “Applied Geoscience” (MGEX) provides students with a solid foundation in various disciplines within geology, environmental sciences and geophysics. We are looking for talented and motivated students who are committed to their postgraduate studies. Our aim is to prepare students for careers in industry, academia and public administration by utilising innovative teaching and supervision methods and offering opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research. Students have access to a wide range of practical methods, including fieldwork, laboratory work and numerical approaches. Teaching takes the form of seminar papers, independent research projects and integrated courses. Students can choose from the following specialisations:
- Computational and Mathematical Geoscience
- Environmental Geoscience
- Groundwater Resources
- Tectonics and Geo-Thermochronology
MGEX is an attractive option for students with a strong interest in research. The programme is tailored to the specific specialisation. The first semester comprises an introduction to the chosen specialisation, including a course on scientific communication. Key components of the second semester are experimental laboratory and field studies, whilst the third semester offers advanced courses. Students undertake an extensive research project and write a final dissertation summarising this work. Students defend their Master’s thesis at the end of their degree.
Please note that this is a English-taught Master’s programme . Applications are made online via the university portal and are open from 1 January to 15 April and from 1 July to 15 October.

- A university degree comprising at least six semesters (e.g. a Bachelor’s degree) in Earth Sciences or a comparable subject area – with a mark of at least 80 per cent of the maximum achievable mark.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What entry requirement (NC) do I need to study at TUBAF?
All Bachelor’s and Diplom degree programmes at TUBAF have no entry restrictions, i.e. there is no numerus clausus. The only requirement is your university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur). The Master’s programmes also have no admission restrictions – however, it is advisable to check the specific entry requirements for each programme. These can be found in the ‘Requirements’ section and in the programme documents.
How long does the Applied Geoscience degree programme last, and when does it start?
The standard duration of study is 4 semesters. Students must achieve 120 credit points.
Students may commence the programme in either the summer or winter semester.
