Johannes Stephan is a professor at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg since 2013. His main fields of research evolve around the central theme of conditions of economic development, with particular foci on systemic transformation, on monetary macroeconomics, on the role of foreign direct investment for technology transfer and spillovers, and on the role of natural resources for economic development. Next to teaching a broad range of economic modules at the TU Freiberg, he is guest lecturer at the Université Paris-Est Créteil and at the AHG Krakow. Since 2013, he is the director of the MBA programme International Business in Emerging and Developing Markets (later re-named International Business and Resources in Emerging Markets); since 2019, he is head of the exam committees of business-related study programmes of the faculty, and since 220, he is member of the faculty board. Before coming to Freiberg, he worked as an empirical researcher at the Halle Institute for Economic Research. In 2005, he was promoted to head of the department of industrial economics at the Institute, where he was able to win several research grants for the European Union in the framework programme. It is this institute where he started his academic career in 1998. He studied economics at the Freie Universität Berlin between 1988 and 1994 and was awarded his PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1997. Johannes was raised in Tokyo, Herrsching am Ammersee, and Helsinki and was dedicated to windsurfing and sailing in his youth. Today, he enjoys his family with two kids at school age.
