The Pulverisette 2 mortar grinder from Fritsch GmbH is an automatic mortar for the universal dry or wet grinding of samples. It is suitable for mixing or homogenising dry samples, emulsions or pastes and can grind both inorganic and organic samples for subsequent syntheses, analyses, quality controls and material tests, for example on plants, foods, medicines, chemicals and building materials.
The grinder works through pressure and friction between the mortar bowl and the freely rotating pestle, ensuring even and fast processing. In contrast to a manually operated mortar, the mortar bowl of an automatic mortar grinder rotates while the axis of the pestle remains stationary. The material transported through the mortar bowl is removed from the wall and base of the mortar bowl by a Vulcollan scraper, which returns the material in front of the pestle. The built-in timer and easy positioning of the pestle load allow for reproducible results, while a large acrylic safety cover allows the grinding process to be observed.
Depending on the hardness of the material to be ground, different mortar bowls and pestles can be selected and installed. The maximum sample volume in the mortar bowl must not exceed 150 ml with an initial grain size of 3 mm. Before starting the process, the grinding force of the mortar can be set by shifting the weight. The grinding time for the material can be set to up to 60 minutes using a rotary switch. The ‘ON’ setting on the rotary switch in turn leads to continuous operation of the mortar grinder. Particle sizes of approximately 1 µm can be achieved by selecting the appropriate settings.
