A bicycle repair station on campus and a tailor-made calendar of events for students: Ben Brüssow and Jan Hüttner impressed the judges with these ideas at the ‘TUBAF of Tomorrow’ ideas competition, held as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Dr Erich Krüger Foundation. In recognition of their ideas, the two students will each receive 500 euros.

“Campus life at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is rich and varied: student cultural events, university societies, activities organised by student representatives, academic lectures and workshops, career events and sports activities. However, information on these is currently published in many different places. For example, on the websites of individual departments, on Instagram channels or via internal calendars,” says Ben Brüssow. He is studying Data Literacy and Business Analytics and, drawing on his programming skills, aims to build a dedicated website that provides information on all events on campus and links to existing university and student calendars. “My idea will strengthen digital connectivity at TUBAF, increase participation in campus life and boost the visibility of student engagement!”

The new events calendar is set to go live by the end of 2027; in the medium term, its administration is to be handed over to student volunteers.

Bicycle repair station right on campus

“For students in Freiberg, bicycles are an integral part of campus life. As long as they can be serviced and maintained, they represent sustainability in mobility, social participation and the freedom to shape one’s daily life independently,” says Jan Hütter of his idea for a repair station in the form of a stele equipped with all the necessary tools.

Hütter is studying Mine Surveying and Applied Geodesy and is involved in the student Bicycle Working Group. The group is an initiative of the university’s student union and is already a point of contact for anyone seeking help with anything to do with bicycles. In future, however, the station should also be available for repairing pushchairs and wheelchairs. “Anyone passing by the station can use the equipment for repairs and maintenance – a student ID card is not required.”
