Future of terra mineralia secured for the long term

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Pohl-Ströher Mineral Foundation today sent out a powerful signal by signing an amendment to the existing agreement: The worldwide unique mineral collection of terra mineralia will remain permanently at the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, which is internationally known as the centre for geosciences, mining and modern raw materials research. This will further strengthen the city's role as an international hotspot for these future-oriented fields.

The permanent loan agreement between the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Pohl-Ströher Mineralienstiftung laid the foundation for today's success back in 2004. Since then, around 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites from the foundation have formed the centrepiece of the exhibition at Freudenstein Castle and the "Mineralogical Collection Germany" in the Krügerhaus on Schlossplatz. The close and trusting partnership has made a significant contribution to Freiberg being perceived worldwide as a centre of excellence for mineralogy and geosciences - a leading position that will be further consolidated by today's decision.

Strong commitment to the future of an international beacon

With the new contract amendment, both partners are not only ensuring the long-term preservation of the unique collection, but also its further development. In doing so, they are emphasising the Pohl family's ongoing commitment to science, culture and education. This long-term commitment is a clear signal: Freiberg will remain the place where knowledge about the earth, its resources and its future converge and continue to be developed.

More than one million visitors have experienced terra mineralia and the Mineralogical Collection Germany since its opening. Building on this strong foundation, the terra mineralia team is now planning to modernise the exhibition concepts and infrastructure, expand digital communication formats and integrate current research projects more intensively into the presentation. At the same time, international networking will be further strengthened - in line with Freiberg's role as a globally anchored science location.

A place of experience for all generations

The terra mineralia in Freudenstein Castle and the Krügerhaus are open all year round. Visitors can look forward to inspiring guided tours, changing special exhibitions, creative family programmes and scientific event formats.

Today's decision makes one thing clear: terra mineralia is here to stay - and with it a globally unique treasure that further raises Freiberg's profile as a leading international location for geosciences, sustainable mining and pioneering approaches to the supply of raw materials and inspires people from all over the world.
