Thoughtful digital supplements to classroom-based studies, digital skills and state-of-the-art online services: students at TU Bergakademie Freiberg are optimally prepared for the digital challenges of the future. According to a survey by app provider UniNow, Freiberg University impresses with its digital offerings in teaching and administration. The students surveyed ranked TU Freiberg first in Saxony and among the top 25 digital universities in Germany (22nd place). TU Bergakademie Freiberg was thus honoured with the "Digital Campus Award 2026" from UniNow.
With degree programmes such as Robotics and Smart Systems Engineering, Law and Economics or Applied Mathematics, TU Bergakademie Freiberg prepares students for the professions of the future in digital laboratories, with gaming apps and with data and AI expertise. Students also benefit from online application and enrolment and digitally supported study organisation. "Digitalisation and AI have become an integral part of teaching today. Digitalisation is not an end in itself, but enhances existing face-to-face courses with digital offerings. I am delighted that we have numerous digital offerings and digital infrastructure that are very well received by students and rated as excellent," says the Vice-Rector for Teaching, Studies and Lifelong Learning at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Professor Swanhild Bernstein.
Learning in the cross-reality lab and gaming app
An app that students at TU Bergakademie Freiberg can use to learn about entrepreneurship shows that learning and gaming complement each other well. Solve a quiz, create a business plan, discover your own entrepreneurial personality and develop important skills: Individually or in teams, students can playfully solve practical tasks and engage in duels. The gaming app is a supplement to the learning content of the entrepreneurship lectures for students of business administration and other degree programmes at TU Bergakademie Freiberg and has been in use since 2022.
For students in the natural sciences, digital supplements to practical work in the laboratory are in demand: CrossLab is a real laboratory that can be controlled digitally from a different location. Since 2012, a total of four universities have been working together under the leadership of TU Freiberg. The cross-reality lab thus becomes a cross-university, interdisciplinary network of digitalised lab modules that can be used for various courses as required.
Excellent digital equipment in lecture theatres and the university library
In recent years, the university has created attractive learning spaces for collaborative, digital and barrier-free learning and the development of ideas and projects with modern lecture theatres. Thanks to powerful projectors, cameras and studio technology, the new lecture theatres are ideally equipped for the latest forms of teaching and learning. The mixed reality room in the university library is a centrepiece of innovative teaching at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. There, students can work on 3D models themselves using virtual reality glasses and immerse themselves virtually in models from chemistry, palaeontology or mining.
