Dr Peter Krüger, born in Freiberg in 1924, bequeathed to the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in 2006 what was at the time the largest endowment ever received by a state university in Germany from a private individual. Since 2007, his wife, Dr Erika Krüger, has been managing the foundation and thus upholding a legacy that extends far beyond the life of its founder, Peter Krüger: To date, almost 30 million euros from the returns on the foundation’s assets have been channelled into funded research projects and the university’s infrastructure.

“Many positive developments at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg are only possible thanks to the exceptional commitment of the Krüger Foundation. And the people of Freiberg also benefit from this: for example, the Krügerhaus on Schlossplatz was completely refurbished using funds from the Dr Erich Krüger Foundation and public grants, and redesigned to house the exhibition of minerals from Germany”, said Professor Jutta Emes, Rector of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, at the anniversary celebrations.

Research for the region

“Thanks to the Foundation’s Research Services, the university is setting cutting-edge research priorities relevant to the regional economy and is thus contributing to innovation – in the region and for the region,” the Rector continued. According to the Foundation’s statutes, the results of this practice-oriented research – for example this one – be implemented primarily in the region.

With funding from the foundation, the university has also been able to make targeted investments in its research infrastructure, including a diving container for scientific diving, the Behavioural Research Lab and a shock wave laboratory. The Krüger Foundation is also committed to supporting early-career researchers, for example by funding ‘Deutschlandstipendien’ and numerous doctoral theses.

As the current chair of the Dr Erich Krüger Foundation, Dr Erika Krüger is very successfully committed to the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and far beyond. Dr Erika Krüger has already received several honours for her outstanding commitment to the foundation. Most recently, in April 2023, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
