In the field of geosciences, attempts are being made to describe the thermodynamics of mineral phases that contain, amongst other elements, rare earth elements. The aim is to carry out thermochemical modelling to understand the formation of these phases under natural conditions – encompassing various temperatures, pressures, concentrations, etc. – within the context of earth’s geological history. This understanding will procide useful insides in the characterisation and exploration of mineral deposits. 

 

Thermodynamics of rare-earth carbonates

This research examines rare earth carbonates, which occur naturally in a wide variety of phases with varying water content. These serve as a source for the industrial extraction of rare-earth elements. Knowledge of their thermodynamic properties therefore enables not only an understanding of the formation and stability of these phases, but also the development of efficient and environmentally friendly extraction processes.
