With an ever-evolving landscape of technology the service offers of a modern scientific library have to be augmented. This is why the University Library Freiberg wants to provide a low-threshold possibility for creation and presentation of 3D and Virtual Reality (VR) projects to interested researchers and students.

Science Lab

Creation of virtual reality scenarios & 3D printing

Our workstation computers are perfectly capable for the conception, programming and rendering of complex three-dimensional content. For the creation of 3D and VR content selected programs (like Unreal, Unity, Blender Meshlab) are already pre-installed. After an on-site tutorial you can also use the 3D printer to physically print out your own 3D models.
The installed short-distance projector can be used for study-related seminars.

The ScienceLab is also equipped with a thin-section scanner and a microsection scanner.

Mixed Reality Space

Making the virtual world tangible!

While the Science Lab is mostly there for making and modelling, you can use the MR Space to actually visualise those scenarios and models. With our "Pico 4E" head-mounted displays you can either experience VR scenarios streamed from a dedicated computer or from the device within. Countless applications are possible and realisable - from the exploration of microscopic drill core sample pores to the visualisation of construction vehicles. People from outside can view the mirrored scenarios on the respective displays so everyone can experience what is happening within the VR scenario.

Study-related workshops and visits from "curious ones" who just want to test out and explore these technologies are much appreciated. Every registered library user is welcome!

Both mixed reality rooms (MR Space and Science Lab) can be used by all registered library users. In order to do so you have to participate in one of two tutorial workshops which explains the use of the VR devices respectively the 3D printer.
