Research interests

• Metamorphic rocks and petrochronology: The methods of geothermobarometry, geochronology, EPMA-Th-U-Pb monazite dating, microstructure investigation and geochemistry are applied to these rocks in order to reconstruct the geodynamic processes and the formation of mineral deposits. The regions currently being investigated are basement rocks in the Eastern Alps, in Saxony, in the Armorican Massif and in South America.
• Ores and processed ores: Application of SEM-based automated mineralogy methods as Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Characterisation of metal ores in deposits and evaluation of technical mineral beneficiation processes. Characterisation of solids in recycling processes.
• Analytical methods: Our own practised analytical methods are:
  (1) Scanning electron microscope SEM Automated mineralogy with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) using a Quanta 600 FEG. Applications in the analysis of rocks, processed ores, solids in recycling processes.
  (2) EPMA electron probe microanalysis with a JEOL electron microprobe. Analytical routines for silicates and Th-U-Pb-CHIME dating of monazite are carried out with a JEOL-JXA-8230, which is located at the Institute of Materials Science at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Collaboration with Dr Joachim Krause, who operates a JEOL-JXA-8530-FEG at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology.
