The TU Bergakademie Freiberg has once again come out on top in the QS World University Rankings, achieving top positions in the subjects of mining and minerals engineering as well as petroleum engineering. The university is thus among the top 50 and top 100 (respectively) universities in the world for both subjects. The QS World University Ranking by Subject 2025 was presented on 12 March by the British education services company QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

Among German universities, TU Freiberg is ranked second in the mining and minerals engineering subject group. In a Europe-wide comparison of these subjects, it achieved sixth place, and 27th place worldwide. TUBAF also achieved second place in Germany in the subject of petroluem engineering, placing it among the 100 best universities in the world in this subject too.
A total of 5 subjects in the ranking
The TU Bergakademie Freiberg was ranked by QS in three further subjects in 2025, making a total of five: In the subject areas of mechanical engineering and material sciences as well as earth sciences, the Saxon university was ranked among the top 200 to 575 best universities worldwide, depending on the subject. The QS ranking does not show exact rankings from world ranking position 50; instead, it groups the universities into groups of 50.
The QS World University Ranking by Subject is based on three criteria: the popularity of graduates on the labour market, internationality in research and studies, and the research and publication activities of researchers. The fact that TUBAF performs so well in these categories particularly emphasises the excellent study conditions in Freiberg. Prospective students can enrol at TU Bergakademie Freiberg until 9 October for the winter semester 2025/26 in all subjects.
The QS World University Ranking of the British education provider QS Quacquarelli Symonds is updated twice a year - currently in 55 subjects at around 1,700 educational institutions. According to QS, it conducts worldwide surveys of academics and employers. The ranking also takes into account the academic publication activity of universities in the Scopus literature database and the Hirsch Index. The ranking is regarded as an important guide for prospective students and young academics.
