With the appointment by the Saxon Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow and the handover of the certificate by State Secretary Professor Heike Graßmann on 21 July 2025, Professor Jutta Emes has officially been appointed as the new Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg. She now succeeds Professor Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, who led the university for ten years.

"It is a great honour and pleasure for me to be the new Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg and to be the first woman - in 260 years - to head this wonderful university," said Professor Jutta Emes. "But tradition also meets modernity at TUBAF. One point I would like to address is to promote a hub for artificial intelligence across all faculties." Jutta Emes also cited strengthening Europe as another focus of her work: "TUBAF is an international university and is very fortunate to be a member of an EU-funded European University Alliance. This is a huge opportunity. Anyone studying, researching or working in Freiberg has the opportunity to do so at eight partner universities."

On 6 February 2025, the Extended Senate of TU Bergakademie Freiberg elected Professor Jutta Emes as the first female rector in the history of the university for a term of five years. The Rector's inauguration with invited guests will follow in autumn with the ceremonial investiture and handover of the chain of office.
