TU Bergakademie Freiberg has achieved first place in the current QS World University Ranking in the subjects of geological engineering and drilling technology and fluid mining in a Germany-wide comparison. The QS World University Ranking is one of the world's best-known rankings, which assesses around 1,500 universities according to research, teaching, labour market reputation and internationality. TUBAF was also able to maintain its position among the best universities in the global ranking and is among the top 50 and top 100 universities in the world for both subjects. The QS World University Ranking by Subject was presented on 25 March 2026 and is based on surveys of academics and companies on the quality of universities.

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is not only Germany's most popular university in the category up to 5000 students according to StudyCheck in 2026, but is also at the top of the QS Ranking. A total of six subjects were ranked: Mining and Minerals Engineering and Petroleum Engineering are in first place in Germany. A new addition is the subject of geology, in which TUBAF ranks directly among the top 200 to 250 best universities worldwide. Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences as well as Geology and Geoecology (Earth Sciences) are similarly successful.

The QS World University Ranking by Subject is essentially based on three criteria: the popularity of graduates on the labour market, internationality in research and studies and the research and publication activities of researchers. The fact that TUBAF performs well in these categories emphasises the excellent study conditions in Freiberg.

Prospective students can currently still enrol at TU Bergakademie Freiberg for the summer semester 2026 and from 1 April for the winter semester 2026/27 in all subjects.
