The computer pool is located in the Gellert Building (Leipziger Str. 23) on the ground floor in room GEL-0032 and is available to all students of the Applied Natural Sciences degree programme during regular opening hours, unless occupied by courses.
Numerous applications for programming, measuring and analysing data are already installed. Furthermore, all computers have both a Windows 7 and a Debian Linux installation as a dual boot (see below for instructions). If further software needs to be installed, e.g. for a course, please contact the administrator.
The door can be opened with the student ID card. If your ID card is not activated for this, please visit Mr Philipp Walther in Karl-Kegel-Bau room EG 42.

Instructions Dualboot:
After starting the PC, a selection menu is displayed in which you can choose an operating system (OS): Windows 7 or Debian Linux. This screen only remains for a few seconds! Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select the desired OS.
If you decide in favour of Windows, everything works as usual. If graphics errors occur, it is best to wait a short time. If no change is visible even after 1-2 minutes, restart the computer "hard", i.e. keep the power button pressed until the PC is switched off. Then start again from the beginning.
If you decide in favour of Linux, the system starts with a few cryptic lines (the so-called splash screen). This is followed by the login screen:
Here you either select your URZ user name and enter the corresponding URZ password (same as for email and Unilogin), or if you have never logged in on this PC before, select "Not listed?" and then enter the user name and password.
A special feature of Linux in the Gellert-Bau Pool is that your personal data is not located in Desktop/Documents/Pictures etc. as well as in Windows under the network drive W (or sometimes X, Z), but that the "Desktop" on each PC is only local, while your personal files are located in the "TUBAF_home" folder.
In practical terms, this means that if you want to have generated data from a session available on any other PC, especially in your URZ network drive under Windows, you must move or copy it to a subfolder of "TUBAF_home".
URZ network drive under Linux
You can find further information and tips on Linux in the "README" file in your local home directory.
