Significance of Rankings
University rankings compare universities worldwide, looking at a selection of indicators, e.g., for research, teaching, and internationality, and attempt to evaluate them. They draw their data from sources as diverse as publicly available data, surveys of various interest groups, publication databases, or directly from the universities themselves. For this reason, the results of rankings are generally not comparable with each other and cannot be regarded as universally valid statements about an institution. Nevertheless, they help students, researchers, and institutions to find out about the strengths and focal points of individual universities and are extremely useful for study orientation.
The TU Bergakademie Freiberg impresses worldwide with its outstanding achievements in research and teaching. Here you will find an overview of our current rankings in the most important national and international rankings.
CHE University Ranking 2025
Every year, the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg ranks among the top universities in Germany in several criteria. The latest results of the CHE ranking are based on surveys of students and teachers from the departments of mechanical engineering, process and energy engineering, and materials science and materials technology. Objective data is also taken into account, e.g., on equipment, research results, international orientation, duration of study, and graduate numbers.
According to the survey conducted by the Center for Higher Education Development, this year's students particularly praise the excellent organization of studies and the opportunities for studying and internships abroad. They also give very good marks for the modern equipment in the library, laboratories, and technical facilities.

QS World University Ranking (WUR)
The QS World University Ranking evaluates universities based on various criteria. Particularly important are academic reputation, which is determined by surveys of researchers worldwide, and the reputation of graduates on the job market. In addition, the student-faculty ratio, research performance based on citations, and the proportion of international students and faculty are also included in the evaluation.
TUBAF performed particularly well in the area of research strength: the university ranks among the top institutions in terms of the indicator “citations per faculty”, i.e., the number of scientific citations per faculty member.
Our international orientation is also reflected in the ranking. TUBAF even achieved the highest score for the indicator “international students”, which measures the proportion of international students.

QS Ranking by Subject (worldwide)
The QS Ranking by Subject evaluates universities in individual subject areas, providing a detailed assessment of academic excellence in specific disciplines. The evaluation is based on four main criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, and the so-called H-index, which measures research productivity and influence. This ranking helps students and researchers to find out specifically about the strengths of universities in their field.
