Just a few weeks ago, pupils from all over Germany were voluntarily sweating over maths problems that were a lot more complicated than they were used to in class. They took part in the second stage of the 64th Maths Olympiad. At the award ceremony on 22 November at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg with 300 guests, the participants finally found out who will represent the Central Saxony East school district at next year's State Olympiad. After the winners from the region had usually only been presented with their certificates informally in class, Freiberg mathematician Professor Ralf Hielscher and his team organised this first ceremony for the Maths Olympians at Freiberg University.
Among the maths aces in Central Saxony are Lukas Wolf (Year 4, Karl Günzel Primary School) and Congyu An (Year 6, Geschwister Scholl Grammar School) from Freiberg. They both took first place in their class at the district level of the nationwide Maths Olympiad. Flöha grammar school pupil Carl Sternkopf is also one of the district's maths aces. He took first place in his grade (year 9) at the district level of the nationwide Maths Olympiad.
Lena Göthel, Alexander Hlousek, Josefine Kiekebelt and Tim Siegel from Cotta Gymnasium Brand-Erbisdorf were also honoured at the awards ceremony at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Magnus Scholz and Thabo Weidauer from the grammar school in Augustusburg won.
The students who won the first three prizes in their class level qualified for the state round of the maths competition. In February 2025, they will compete against other pupils in grades 5 to 12 from the state.
