With its research activities at the Freiberg site, the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS covers the field of carbon cycle technologies. In addition to extensive laboratory analysis, the research infrastructure includes a unique range of equipment for technology development on a laboratory, pilot plant and pilot plant scale, which has been used to realise numerous research projects on the chemical recycling of a wide range of input materials.

DBI-Virtuhcon GmbH offers scientific, experimentally validated consulting and research services including technology development and transfer in the field of thermochemical utilisation of carbonaceous raw materials.
It was founded in 2014 as a spin-off of the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg (IEC).
The company is based in Freiberg and is an affiliated institute of TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
DBI-Virtuhcon GmbH operates pilot-scale test plants, including a 5 MW entrained-flow gasification plant.

Centre for efficient high-temperature material conversion
IEC cooperation at the ZeHS: The IEC is part of the network that has formed at the ZeHS, a central scientific facility of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in the field of high-temperature processes. The IEC operates test facilities for plasma-assisted gasification, methane pyrolysis and laboratory analytical equipment in the technical centre halls and laboratories of the ZeHS. The ZeHS is also a meeting point and starting point for cross-institute projects and collaborations within the university.
