How District Hospital and University Cooperate in Emergencies in Mines

The Institute of Mining and Special Civil Engineering and the Research and Teaching Mine of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg intensify the cooperation with the emergency medicine of the district hospital Freiberg. PD Dr. med. Andreas Fichtner is a new honorary professor of the university from October and will also impart his knowledge to students in the future.

Since 2019, the university and the district hospital have been working together in teaching and research in underground rescue: "The jointly developed course, equipment and rescue concept on "Tactical Medical Mining Rescue" addresses challenges in emergencies in mines in a completely novel way and represents a forward-looking solution approach not only for the raw materials industry, but for all industries with increased personal risk potential and extended rescue routes," says Prof. Helmut Mischo, who works closely with the Freiberg emergency physician.

High Demand for Award-Winning Course in Industry and Studies

With the concept developed jointly by the research and training mine and district hospital, the two institutions have defined a nationwide standard to date, which found its way into the guidelines of the German Committee for Mine Rescue. Since 2019, the course has been offered more than fifteen times to internal and external experts at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg by Dr. Andreas Fichtner and university staff. In this context, TU Bergakademie Freiberg is also the nationwide certification body for this training in other companies. In 2021, the joint concept was awarded the Hans Werner Feder Prize of the German Society for Interdisciplinary Emergency and Acute Medicine.

Integration into Teaching at TU Freiberg

The current content on rescue in mining is also an integral part of teaching in the new geoengineering degree program as an elective subject in the mining specialization. Dr. Andreas Fichtner also supervises doctoral studies at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. As future specialists, the graduates will use their knowledge to ensure greater safety in mines.

The rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, presented the new honorary professor of industrial safety and tactical emergency medicine in the extractive industries with his certificate of appointment in July 2023.
