Anybody starting a degree programme at TU Bergakademie Freiberg can look forward to optimal support at the start of their studies. This is one of the results of the latest CHE ranking, which was published on 2 May 2024. This year's ranking analysed the subjects of chemistry, geosciences, computer science and mathematics. In all four subjects, the university received the top rating of "very good" for support at the start of studies.
During their studies, students rate the university library's facilities particularly positively. With 4.7 out of a possible 5 stars, the prospective computer scientists voted the university library into the top category. The geosciences students also gave the new university library in Freiberg a top rating of 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars. Susanne Kandler, head of the library, is delighted that the wide range of services on offer has met with such a positive response from students: "Our university library, which will be completed in 2023, offers a wide range of learning and working opportunities: Individual and group workstations as well as a workstation for the blind and visually impaired, lounge areas, a reading terrace and a parent-child workroom. A mixed reality room and a podcast studio support working in the digital world."
Seminars and lab practicals without waiting lists
Students also gave top marks to the organisation of studies in all four subjects surveyed. They particularly praised the easy access to courses without waiting lists. They awarded chemistry and maths 4.9 out of 5 stars. Because lab spaces are always accessible, chemistry students even gave the university's labs full marks.
The good student support is also worth mentioning. The respondents expressly emphasised the good cooperation between students and teaching staff. The Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Prof Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, commented: "Studying in Freiberg means studying under excellent conditions and with a personal touch. We are delighted that the students surveyed see it that way. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg offers its students the opportunity for practice-orientated learning and research. We work together with the next generation of scientists to find answers to the pressing challenges of the present."
Students interested in gaining their own impression of the excellent study conditions at TU Bergakademie Freiberg will have the opportunity to do so on 25 May at the Study Information Day from 2 to 5.30 pm.
The CHE ranking
The ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) evaluates the opinions of 120,000 students nationwide. These supplement the facts on study programmes, teaching and research that are published annually in the ZEIT study guide. The current survey focussed on subjects such as chemistry, geosciences, mathematics and, for the first time, computer science. Not all categories are surveyed in all subjects (the library category, for example, was not included in the survey of chemistry students). Every three years, students have the opportunity to take part in a ranking for their subject. For a rather small university like TU Bergakademie Freiberg, active participation is important: the Centre for Higher Education Development only evaluates subjects in which a minimum number of students take part in the survey.
