Students are already involved in research at an early stage of their studies. This is made possible by sufficient places in laboratory practicals, a very good research infrastructure and a variety of opportunities to participate directly in research as a research assistant. Innovative teaching concepts are also part of the research- and practice-oriented studies at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Students learn not only how to handle equipment and technology and how to apply theoretical models and evaluate data, but also teamwork, creative work, critical thinking and responsible action.

The Center for World University Rankings in the United Arab Emirates evaluates universities on the basis of seven indicators. Research performance accounts for a total of 40 percent and examines both the number of citations and the total number of publications, as well as their shares in high-ranking journals and in particularly influential journals. In addition, the quality of teaching, the organisation of the faculties and the question of which positions alumni hold are also included in the evaluation. TU Bergakademie Freiberg was evaluated exclusively in the research performance category in 2023.
