Interviewed in October 2023
Industrial engineer Marie Moses graduated at the top of her year in 2011. In the same year, she began her studies in industrial engineering with a focus on materials technology and a specialisation in metal forming. During her bachelor's degree, Marie Moses worked as a student assistant, accompanied the ORTE as a campus specialist and was involved in organising the Racetech Racing Team. She completed her bachelor's thesis at Benteler Steel/Tube GmbH in Paderborn. From 2015, she studied Industrial Engineering and Management in Freiberg and completed her Master's thesis at MKM Mansfelder Kupfer und Messing GmbH in Hettstedt in 2016. After completing her studies, she began her professional career as a research assistant at the Institute of Metal Forming in autumn 2016. During
this time, she also began her doctorate. In 2021, she emigrated to Sweden with her husband and has been working as a process engineer in the copper rolling mill at Elcowire AB in Helsingborg ever since.
Question: You studied in Freiberg. What made you decide to study at the Bergakademie?
I decided to study industrial engineering after graduating from high school because I found the combination of business and technology interesting. I liked the specialisations at the Bergakademie, as there was also deep drilling technology and materials technology in addition to traditional mechanical engineering. I found that exciting.
Question: What did you learn during your studies in Freiberg that particularly helps you in your current (research) work?
This helps me in my day-to-day work, as I usually have to solve many problems at the same time. The different topics are prioritised and worked through one after the other.
Question: What lasting memories do you have of your time at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg?
I only have positive memories of my time at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. I would study there again in a heartbeat! My husband and I got to know each other at the university. My time at the university also helped me to mature personally.
Question: When you look back on your studies with the knowledge you have today: is there anything you would do differently or what you would pay attention to?
I think I would take more time. I completed my degree in the standard period of study. The study period went by so quickly, and in hindsight I think it's a shame that I didn't make it abroad. In my current job, I work abroad in Europe and find it a great enrichment.
Question: What advice would you like to give to current students in Freiberg?
Enjoy your time at university, but also make the most of it! Meet lots of new people, have fun, get involved, be bold, broaden your horizons!
Question: What do you find particularly interesting about your current job?
I work with lots of people who often haven't studied or have little or no knowledge of materials. Explaining complex topics simply in a foreign language is sometimes challenging, but it's also fun.
Question: Do you still have professional or private contacts with TU Bergakademie Freiberg today?
Thanks to my ongoing doctorate, I am still in contact with the Institute of Metal Forming, and I am also still in contact with some fellow students and flatmates.
Question: Finally, tell us your life motto?
I don't have one! 😉
