During the winter holidays, terra mineralia at Schloss Freudenstein Freiberg welcomes young guests to the Ice Age. The girls and boys learn about the people and animals that lived in Europe during the last ice age and how glaciers, ice and snow shaped the landscape.

The children travel back 10,000 years into the past: they are at the end of the cold period and therefore also at the end of the Palaeolithic Age. Europe is still partially covered by large glaciers and it is much colder than it is today. On a tour of the exhibition, the children can playfully find out what exactly an ice age is and how it was connected to the Palaeolithic period. They learn about the types of people who lived in Europe and how our ancestors used stones and minerals as tools, hunting weapons, to make paint and even to make fires.

In the hands-on "Research Journey" laboratory, students from TU Bergakademie Freiberg conduct exciting experiments together with the children. How is a glacier formed? How can it move? Finally, the question of how we can recognise today that the great glaciers of the Ice Age actually existed is answered. Once the girls and boys have answered all the questions, they can create a cave painting to take home with them.
