The main research topics of the Institute of Materials Science (IWW) are
- Development of models for description of the relationships between the structure and microstructure of materials and their properties relying on physical and chemical principles
- Utilization of these relationships, materials models and specific microstructure features for development of novel materials and for their production using environmentally friendly technologies
Along with the development of new materials and functionalization of established materials, Institute of Materials Science works on a further development of
- Methods for microstructure analysis and analysis of crystal structure defects,
- Methods of thermoanalysis,
- Thermodynamic databases,
- Related techniques for materials simulations and modelling.
Investigated materials classes include metals, semiconductors, ceramics and composites. The developed materials models are intended for a holistic description of the materials properties on different scales.
The Institute of Materials Science is involved in teaching of Materials Science, Techniques for Advanced Materials Analysis and Thermodynamic Analysis for various study courses.
