There are two professorships at the Institute of Materials Engineering:
- Professorship for Materials Engineering, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Horst Biermann
- Professorship for Materials Testing and Component Strength, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lutz Krüger
In teaching, the IWT is responsible for training in the specialisation "Materials Engineering". This is offered in the "Materials Science and Materials Technology" degree programme and in the "Industrial Engineering and Management" Bachelor's/Master's degree programme.
Research areas
- Mechanical stress behaviour of metallic materials
- Material testing, component strength and fracture mechanics
- Heat treatment, Surface layer and surface treatment
- Electron beam technologies
- Corrosion and corrosion protection
- Additive manufacturing
Materials
- Steels, cast iron materials, nickel-based alloys, shape memory alloys
- Light metals (e.g. titanium, aluminium, aluminium alloys) e.g. titanium, aluminium, magnesium alloys)
- Composite materials (steel-ZrO2, Al-Al2O3, refractory metal-Al2O3), hard metals
Ceramic refractory materials (e.g. MgO-C, Al. e.g. MgO-C, Al2O3-C)
