Teaching

In its teaching profile, Technical Mineralogy sees itself as a link between the classical geosciences and materials science. The "Technical Mineralogy" field of study imparts knowledge about:

  • Occurrence and properties of natural non-metallic raw materials
  • Mineralogy of technical mass products such as ceramics, glass and cement as well as selected technical high-performance materials
  • Mineral synthesis
  • Polarisation microscopy and complex analysis of minerals and technical products

Research

In its research profile, Technical Mineralogy sees itself as a link between the traditional geosciences and materials science. The ongoing research work is mostly practice-orientated, interdisciplinary and covers a wide range of topics, such as

  • Complex investigations of quartz raw materials and SiO2 minerals
  • Methodological developments in cathodoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy
  • Typomorphic properties of selected minerals
  • Contributions of mineralogy to natural stone and building material problems.
  • Cultivation of single crystals with applicable piezoelectric and acoustic properties
