„3rd International Workshop - Research in Shallow Marine and Fresh Water Systems” at the University of Bremen from 14 to 15 January 2013

The results of the most recent expedition to Panarea (Aeolian Islands, Italy) from 31 August to 14 September 2012 were presented at the “3rd International Workshop - Research in Shallow Marine and Fresh Water Systems” at the University of Bremen from 14 to 15 January 2013. Insights into current research projects of the Scientific Diving Center Freiberg were given in 4 different lectures:

Laminated mineral precipitates in gas and water escape structures from the shallow marine hydrothermal system in Panarea, Italy

  • Richard Stanulla, Thomas Pohl, Broder Merkel

Gas sampling of submarine fumaroles

  • Mandy Schipek, Nadja Schmidt, Robert Sieland, Nicolai-Alexeji Kummer, Broder Merkel

The scientific diver training concept at the Scientific Diving Center of TU Bergakademie Freiberg

  • Broder Merkel, Thomas Pohl, Gerald Barth, Mandy Schipek

Long term monitoring of gas discharge at large submarine fumaroles of Pararea, Italy

  • Katrin Bauer, Matthias Hertwig, Marco Ponepal, Gerald Barth

Furthermore, the SDC exhibited two poster presentations on site:

Geothermal investigations of the submarine caldera of Panarea with respect to energy utilization

  • Wolfram Canzler, Gerald Barth, Thomas Grab, Broder Merkel

Geochemical-mineralogical investigation of degassing structures caused by recent volcanic hydrothermalism - La Calcara, Panarea (Italy)

  • Andreas Prautsch, Richard Stanulla, Thomas Pohl, Broder Merkel

Fortunately, the SDCs active participation in this conference resulted in a close cooperation with the Bremen-based researchers in the field of marine geophysics. Also, we were equipped with newly developed scientific diving devices by the University of Bremen that we tested in late 2013 during our annual Panarea field trip.
