Research Interests

My research interests focus on surface/underground mining project evaluation, mining method selection techniques, 3D modelling and mine planning, costs calculation, cut-off-grade strategies and mining optimisation, mineral economics and market analysis for strategic minerals and metals. I have devoted several years on the research for the mineability of rare earth element deposits and the subsequent feasibility of rare earth mining projects.

I continue this research and have expanded it to the feasible exploitation of other critical raw materials as well (nickel, cobalt, lithium, indium, germanium among others). In addition to the aforementioned, my interests also lie in the fields of environmental, social, and political impact of mining projects, acquisition of social license to operate, and health & safety measures in mining environments.

In addition, I have a long-standing interest in laboratory and field work, particularly for the conduction of standard rock mechanics tests, the measurement of radon gas, and effect of radioactivity on people and surrounding environments.

To keep pace with the evolution in the mining industry, my recent research interest is also focusing on the automation and digitalisation of mining operations, as well as the digitilisation of the economic valuation of mining projects (how to introduce the IoT in mining operations, potential mining project evaluations and commodity market analyses).

MINETRAIN (funded by EC/EIT Raw Materials)

01.2018 - 03.2021

MINETRAIN is a European Research Project funded by EIT Raw Materials. MINETRAIN’s objective is to develop an advanced level training program for mining industry professionals. The novelty of this education is that it provides learners with a holistic view of the whole mine lifecycle, as well as opportunities to test both skills and mining equipment in an actual deep mine site, that is the Pyhäsalmi minelocated in Central Finland. This project will also assess the viability of using a closing mine for such novel, high quality teaching for professionals and students.
