Welcome, dear prospective students!
On the following pages, we tried to summarize all relevant information concerning the application process for our MBA IMRE programme. For further information on the programme itself, please look at the information provided on the pages of the programme above, the study guide etc.
We are looking forward to your application and hope to see you in Freiberg next autumn.
Prof. Dr. Johannes Stephan (Study Dean and Chairman of the Examinations Committee)

Admission requirements

Admission to the programme is very competitive indeed: of around 350 applications we receive each year, only some 180 are longlisted to send us complete application packages for a more careful review of formal documents. Of those applicants, only approximately 60 are shortlisted for final negotiation on admission. At the end, some 15 to 20 students enrol each year.

  • Bachelor's Degree
Applicants for a start until summer semester 2020 have to hold a Bachelor's Degree (4-years course) in either Natural Sciences or Engineering. As from winter semester 2020/21, we enrole applicants with a Bachelor in economics or business-related fields. The decision on eligibility is based on individual assessment.
  • Job experience
As a general rule, minimum of 1 year job experience is required.
  • English Proficiency
Since the course is held in English throughout the four terms, English proficiency has to be proven by either a TOEFL-score of minimum 90 points (internet-based), or IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5 or an equivalent test. A waiver for the test of English language proficiency will be granted to students with English as mother tongue, and may be granted where the previous education was completely in English language.
  • Analytical test
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): we expect usually a minimum of 570 points for the verbal and quantitative sections (Programme code 123-ZK-12). Or: GRE General Test : we expect usually a minimum of 305 points for the verbal and quantitative reasoning sections) (DI Code 8233).
The test may be waived for applicants from TU Bergakademie Freiberg with a complete Bachelor or Master (in business-related subjects), and applicants from partner universities with double degree contracts (UPEC, WUP, WUST, CUGB).
In individual cases, we may extend a conditional admission for applicants who did not yet pass one of the tests with sufficient points. This is on the condition that the applicant will do the test after being shortlisted by our selection committee. This is by no means a waiver for a test, it stays compulsory, and failing to achieve sufficient points excludes the conditionally admitted student from the study programme.
  • Motivation
Interested students should prove a high motivation for the program which is assessed through the letter of motivation which is mandatory part of the application.
Make sure to explain on 1 page only (!) why you chose the MBA IMRE, how you relate your previous education and/or working experiences with the topics of the programme, and how IMRE can help your future career plans

Proficiency in German language is not necessary, the programme is taught entirely in English language.

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg has the DI Code 8233 for ETS (GRE and TOEFL tests), and 123-ZK-23 for GMAT. Please make sure to use these codes when you do the tests.
Due to Corona:
1. For you to be able to start your studies from your respective home country, the courses in your study programme will only take place as an online course in the winter semester 2020/21 (and probably also in the summer semester 2021). It is not necessary to be physically present during the winter semester. We strongly advise you NOT to travel!
2. Please note that in case of a conditional admission (e.g. submission of IELTS, GRE or GMAT, German Certificate or Bachelor's degree for enrolment), the relevant evidence along with your applicant number shall be sent to the our Admissions Office (zulassungsbueroatzuv [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de) by September 15, 2020. An enrolment will not be possible if the conditions stated in the admission cannot be fulfilled!
