About the association
The German Academy of Underwater Sciences (GAUSS) e.V. is a national alliance for scientific work under water using appropriate diving techniques. Above all, their aim is to promote research and training as well as provide a network for the exchange of know-how in the field of scientific diving.
The focus is on the implementation of scientific standards and principles, along with the observance of national and international legal aspects (laws/regulations and insurance terms and conditions) when diving in and outside of Germany. The GAUSS is in close contact with public insurance institutions of the German federal states, such as the employers' liability insurance association and the state insurance institutions, as well as with research funding agencies like the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), and with the World Underwater Federation (CMAS), the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP), the Marine Division of the European Commission and other interest groups.
Purpose of the association
- Designing and promoting all aspects of underwater scientific work conducted by divers
- Promotion and recognition of (advanced) training and method development in the field of scientific diving
- Representation in national and international committees
- Certification and brevetting of researchers and corresponding instructors in the area of scientific diving
- Provision and development of necessary regulations
- Close collaboration with
- universities, colleges, research institutes and scientific diving organizations as well as
- national and international institutions offering training and examination of researchers for scientific work under water
- Representation of interests of scientific diving trainers and researchers working scientifically under water
- Quality control regarding compliance with appropriate standards in scientific work under water
