TU Freiberg: Construction Work Begins on New University Library and Lecture Hall Complex

Draft design for the new library and lecture theatre complex
Work has officially commenced on the construction of the new university library and auditorium complex at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Under the direction of Saxony's state-owned Real Estate and Construction Management Company (the SIB), excavations began on February 13 to facilitate the construction of the foundations.

With this project, a further central component of Freiberg's Science Corridor will soon be built on the southern part of the city's former fairgrounds site by the end of 2021, as planned. The new building will replace the current library, which was erected between 1977 and 1980 at Agricolastrasse 10.

The building will be divided into two parts. A tower will form the main building, and will house the library's administration and magazine collection. A low-rise building will abut the tower, housing the lecture halls on the ground floor and the actual open-access library on the upper floors, as well as the associated workplaces for students. The lecture hall complex will comprise three lecture halls and two seminar rooms.

The construction project is being financed by tax revenues on the basis of the budget approved by the members of Saxony's state parliament, and the construction costs are estimated at EUR 40 million. Approximately EUR 6.9 million were provided for preparatory construction measures, such as the construction of site roadways, the relocation of media, the provision of water and wastewater connections and the redevelopment of the site.

In May, 2017, the first sod was turned on the preparatory infrastructure work for the new buildings of The Center for Efficient High-Temperature Substance Conversion (ZeHS) and the lecture theatre complex of TU Bergakademie Freiberg at the Messeplatz (the former fairgrounds) in Freiberg.

Under the management of SIB's Chemnitz branch, construction work began on schedule a short time later, with the excavation for the foundations of the ZeHS. The shell of the building is now almost complete, and the finishing work is already in full swing.
