The Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, used the occasion of laying the foundation stone for a new research hall at his university to emphasize that good science and research will only thrive in an open-minded atmosphere.

He said: “It is standard practice at TU Bergakademie Freiberg to be a university free of fear, open to the world and respecting an open, free and international discourse. I thank the many members of staff, students and teaching staff of the university who daily practice and defend these basic values of social and scientific coexistenceThere is no room for xenophobia, humiliation of minorities and inhuman expressions and behaviour at our university and at any university of the 21st century. Those are signs of mental brutalization and mean a backslide to dark times.” He thus refers to travel bans for scientists, prohibiting the exchange among them, but also to occasional statements of foreign and national politicians.
