Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht re-elected as Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht was re-elected on May 26 by the Extended Senate. The current and future Rector will be in charge of university governance for the coming five years.

His second mandate is expected to commence on July 21 when he will be officially appointed by the Saxon Ministry of Science.

Only members of the University's Extended Senate were eligible to vote. The committee consists of the voting members of the Senate and representatives of university teachers, academic staff, students and other staff elected in the Extended Senate. Of the 95 members present, 61 voted for Prof. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht and 34 for candidate Prof. Carsten Drebenstedt. Both candidates had presented their goals and ideas for the future of TU Bergakademie Freiberg to the university community beforehand.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht stated that he plans to further strengthen the university's succefull positioning as a University of Ressources so as to drive current processes of transformation in society.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht is Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg since 2015. Also, since 2012, he teaches energy and labour law at the university. Since 2017 he is Chair of the Saxon State Rectors' Conference. Prof. Barbknecht was born in 1958 in Cornberg (Hesse) and studied economics and law at Georg-August-University Göttingen. Since 1987 he is attorney and since 1992 specialist lawyer of labour law. Prof. Barbknecht is member of several committees and acts as treasurer of the World Energy Council Germany and Chair, Finance Committee of World Energy Council, London.
