In March, two scientists from Freiberg gave speeches at an international Engineering Symposium in Baku, Azerbaijan.

On the 16th of March 2019, the first Global Engineering Symposium took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. A total of 15 speakers from 8 different countries were invited to give keynote speeches in an effort to bring graduate students, researchers and other representatives from various engineering fields (computer-, petroleum-, mining-, chemical-, and mechanical engineering) together to discuss the innovations in their research fields and also the relationship between different engineering fields.

In this one-day symposium, that was sponsored from local companies like Metak LLC, Azerstar and LLC VASW, more than 250 delegates participated, the majority of which were undergraduate and post-graduate engineering students thirsty for knowledge and motivated to expand their network.

Among the invited speakers were two academic staff members of TU Bergakademie Freiberg: Prof.Dr. rer.nat. Felix Plamper of the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Dr.-Ing. George Barakos of the Institute of Mining and Special Civil Engineering. Both speakers referred to the engineering education programs of TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the current research status on Chemistry and Mining engineering respectively.

It should be mentioned that the symposium was entirely organised by a group of Azerbaijanish undergraduate and graduate students who for this reason have founded the Horizon Education Agency. The leader of this team effort and co-funder of Horizon Education Agency is Dipl.-Ing. Anvar Mammadli, who is also a Master student at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, in the international master program „Sustainable Mining and Remediation Management (MoRe)“.

The symposium was a great success; it was reported in the national television and was published in the national press of Azerbaijan, whilst also receiving international recognition. The event is expected to have tremendous impact in the local engineering society and educational system of Azerbaijan and the organisation team has already started preparing the next event for 2020.
