At a ceremony on 31st January, the Graduate and Research Academy of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg bids farewell to 85 young scientists and researchers who successfully completed their doctorate (82) or habilitation (3) in the previous year.

"With their contributions to research and teaching, our young scientists once again demonstrate the high level of professional performance at the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. I am particularly pleased about the 27 per cent share of women", explains Rector Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, who together with Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Rudolf Kawalla and the deans of the faculties presented the letters of graduation to those who had completed their doctorates and habilitations.

Dr. Erika Krüger from the Dr. Erich Krüger Foundation will also be present in person at the ceremony this year. She will honor two graduates of the Krüger Research College Freiberger Biohydrometallurgisches Zentrum (BMHZ), which is financed by the foundation. The proceeds of the foundation will be used to promote practice- and application-oriented science and research at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg as well as young scientists and the work of the Graduate and Research Academy. It also helps to further enhance the high international reputation of Freiberg University. Thus, many students and doctoral candidates come to TU Freiberg every year. In 2019, one fifth of the doctoral and post-doctoral students from 15 countries worldwide, including China, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Vietnam and Brazil, will come to Freiberg University of Technology.

The keynote lecture will be held by Prof. Carola Jungwirth. The alumna of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg came to Freiberg after her studies of business administration at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich and received her doctorate in economics in 1998. Today she is President of the University of Passau, where she has been since 2007 and has already served as Dean of Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Economics.

A film project by the Graduate and Research Academy, supported by the university, the media centre, the Freiberg Alumni Network and the Friends and Sponsors of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, shows the parts of the world to which the former doctoral candidates of the TU Bergakademie still end up and what professions they pursue there. This year Prof. Welf-Guntram Drossel (Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU Dresden) and Prof. Vinzenz Brendler (Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf) will introduce themselves.
