Shaozhong Du was presented with the Hans Carl von Carlowitz Award for Sustainability in Chemnitz on November 29. Together with his nominator, Prof. Hongwei Ni, President of the Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST), Mr. Du was also given an honorary reception by the Rector of TU.

"Sustainability is a concept that was formulated by Hans Carl von Carlowitz here in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in relation to the fields of mining and forestry. We are pleased that the concept of sustainability has found its way to China, and now unites us and our partners there," said TU Freiberg Rector Prof. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht.

Shaozhong Du received the award from the Hans Carl von Carlowitz Society for the Promotion of Sustainability in the international category for his commitment to ecological civilization and a closed-loop economy, as well as his dedication to low-carbon production systems and lifestyles in China.

Together with Dr. Dieter Fuesslein, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Carlowitz Society, Shaozhong Du was eager to learn more about the current state of research on the subject of carbon-related closed-loop economics at the Institute of Energy Process Engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which also works closely with Chinese partners in science and industry.

Mr. Du is one of the best-known and most influential sustainability activists in the People's Republic of China, and is the former head of the environmental authority in Beijing. From 2012 to 2014, he served as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Beijing Environmental Science Society, a non-governmental organization. Shaozhong Du travels throughout China to inform the public about projects and developments that are either worth imitating from an ecological standpoint, or that could prove problematic for the local environment. Through social media, he reaches more than 5 million of his fellow citizens. He is also a lecturer at the Beijing Institute of Technology and the Communication University of China.

The Rector of the University of Wuhan, Prof. Hongwei Ni, visited TU Bergakademie Freiberg from November 28 to December 1. With his delegation of four, he visited various technical facilities at TU Freiberg and took part in the traditional St. Barbara celebration of the Association of Friends of TU Bergakademie Freiberg (VFF) in the Alte Mensa. Wuhan University is one of TU Freiberg's closest cooperation partners in China.
