In general, our research methodology can be applied to any system. However, high-quality research is often only possible when there is already profound expertise in the material system. Previous intensive research activities in the group covered the following material systems in particular:

Fe-base alloys

  • Steel and cast iron: Utilisation of thermochemical heat treatments (nitriding, carburising or nitrocarburising) to improve the near-surface properties.
  • Fe-based shape memory alloys; thermodynamics of processing and martensite formation

Intermetallic phases

  • Laves phases for high temperature applications
  • Aluminium alloys: Fe as impurity/complementary element; formation of intermetallic phases in joining processes between steel/cast iron and aluminium
  • Soldering: interaction of tin-based solders and formation of intermetallic phases
