Introduction to English for Specific Purposes

(Module 1 of UNIcert III)

Goals of the qualification

Students acquire the fundamental skills of oral and written communication in English for Specific Purposes, including a general academic and subject-specific terminology as well as basic structures for technical language.

 

 

Course details

  • Duration & Frequency: two semesters, starting in the winter semester
  • Prerequisites: Knowledge from upper secondary school or equivalent to UNIcert II
  • Further use of the module: Prerequisite for Module 2 of UNIcert III
  • Workload: 90 minutes (2 x 45 minute periods) attendance per week for two semesters, 60 periods of attendance and 60 periods of self study (120 periods in total)
  • Credit points & Grades: 4 credit points, on successful participation in class  (at least 80% attendance) and on passing the written exam (90 minutes duration). The grade for this module is based on the grade for the written exam.
 

 

Further English for Specific Purposes

(Module 2 of UNIcert III)

Goals of the qualification

Students acquire advanced language  proficiency, in order to complete valuable stays abroad of an academic nature. The completed examinations necessary for obtaining the certificate confirm a high degree of ability to communicate in spoken and written language for specific purposes, which corresponds to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

 

Course details

  • Duration & Frequency: two semesters, starting in the winter semester
  • Prerequisites: successful completion of the module Introduction to English for Specific Purposes for the particular subject
  • Further use of the module: The Germany-wide recognised qualification enables students to participate in valuable studies and internships abroad and facilitates entry into working life.
  • Workload: 90 minutes (2 x 45 minute periods) attendance per week for two semesters, 60 periods of attendance and 120 periods of self study (180 periods in total)
  • Credit points & Grades: 6 credit points, on successful participation in class  (at least 80% attendance), academic presentation as exam prerequisite (20 minutes duration) and exam (150 minutes written and 45-60 minutes oral examination). The module grade is derived from the exam grade. The module grade corresponds to the grade for the UNIcert III qualification.
