NK2 Workshop on Chemical Recycling

On 5th October 2021, the NK2 Network for a Circular Carbon Economy organized a chemical recycling workshop which focused on waste pyrolysis.

It was our pleasure to organize the workshop as a hybrid event, and that about half of the 36 participants were able to take part in the event physically in Freiberg.

Prof. Bernd Meyer – scientific director of the NK2 Network – opened the workshop by highlighting the relevance of the topic. This was followed by an overview presentation by IEC’s PhD researcher Ludwig Seidl who provided a state-of-the-art review of chemical recycling.

Prof. Martin Gräbner – Director of the Institute for Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS) Branch Lab Circular Carbon Technologies in Freiberg – moderated the following two sessions where leading pyrolysis industry actors such as Recenso, Pryme, Mura Technology, Lyondell Basell, OMV, Agilyx and Nexus Fuels presented their technological advances and project development status.

Session 3 – moderated by NK2 scientific coordinator Dr. Roh Pin Lee – provided insights into complementary developments of relevance for chemical recycling. Besides an overview presentation of the ocean waste collection activities of the NGO One Earth One Ocean e.V., IEC’s PhD researcher Florian Keller also provided some insights into challenges of transparency and comparability in LCA of chemical recycling technologies.
