Doctoral Studies

As a doctoral student at TU Bergakademie Freiberg you have the choice between two types of doctoral studies: either you choose the traditional way or the structured doctoral studies.

Arten der Promotion

The following table gives you an overview about their main differences:

Traditional DoctorateStructured Doctoral Studies
 IndividalWithin a Graduate School
You mainly concentrate on the research on your topic.
It is however possible to also acquire a few other interdisciplinary qualifications.
The structured doctoral training programme can be carried out individually, i.e. without belonging to a graduate school. The individual programme of study is based on the guidelines set out by the Faculty Board. The candidate should also take into account what is on offer at the Centre of Advanced Study and Research or other establishments. The structured doctoral training programme can be carried out within a graduate school. In this case, allocated doctorates run largely simultaneously and the graduate school determines the study programme.
