We design materials for future applications

The central missions of materials scientists and technologists around the world are the development of novel materials for upcoming applications and the development of energy-efficient technologies for materials production. Some examples of the emerging application fields are the data and energy storage, the aircraft and car construction, and the medical engineering. Also many everyday commodities would not exist without the visions and ideas of materials scientists and technologists.

For the education of materials scientists and materials technologists, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg offers a unique complementary combination of both fields. The prospective materials scientists and technologists are educated frequently in a close cooperation with industry to become experts for metals, ceramics, composites, electronic materials, and sensors. The Freiberg diploma holders are in great demand by both, research institutes and industry.

In 2022, the Freiberg University achieved top position in CHE ranking “Materials Science / Materials Engineering”

In the ranking of the Centre for Universitary Development (CHE) from 2022, the degree programs offered by the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology were rated as outstanding in the section Materials Science / Materials Engineering. The CHE ranking is based on statistical data and student’s opinions.

In the category "Studies and Teaching", whose criteria (e.g. teaching offer, supervision, study organisation, overall study situation) were primarily assessed by the students, our department is always in one of the first two places.

Approximately 25 German universities were included in the ranking, at which material science or material technology study programmes are located.
