Silicon Chemistry and Chemical Materials Science
We deal with material syntheses from molecular precursors. The main objective of our work is the production of useful inorganic materials. Their properties are adjustable on the atomic level of the starting materials. We focus on the molecular and material chemistry of silicon, high pressure syntheses, sol-gel processes, and hybrid materials.
Salt and Mineral Chemistry
To understand the chemistry of metallurgical processes, we study redox reactions in ionic liquids, in salt solutions, and at mineral surfaces. From this, we develop environmentally compatible methods for the extraction and recycling of raw materials, and for electrochemical applications.
In the area of salt- and building material chemistry, solubility equilibria are investigated and modelled. Applications include the use of salt deposits and salt lakes, the assessment of sites for HLW repositories, as well as the development of, e.g. salt resistant, building materials.
