Student excursion of the INEMET

From 15th to 20th September 2019 an excursion took place under the guidance of Prof. Michael Stelter. The participants were students of the faculty 5 and postgraduates of the INEMET as well as staff members of the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg.

The destinations were selected companies in the field of nonferrous metallurgy and treatment of nonferrous metals in north and central Germany.

The first destination was Hamburg. The Aurubis AG and the Trimet Aluminium SE were visited, which are important producers of copper and aluminum respectively. Moreover the SJM Hamburg GmbH was visited which is specialized in the field of processing nonferrous scrap.

A second destination was Goslar. The participants gained insight into the production and the recycling of ultrapure metals like Gallium and Germanium and high-melting metals like Tungsten at PPM Pure Metals GmbH and H.C. Tungsten GmbH.  At  JL Goslar Anoden GmbH the production and recycling of lead anodes for the hydrometallurgical winning of nonferrous metals could be observerd. The final visit was at KME Mansfeld GmbH in Hettstedt, a producer of pre-products consisting of copper and brass.

All companies provided interesting insight into production and recycling of nonferrous metals. In three cases the guidance was conducted by graduates of the INEMET, who presented also their current fields of activity.

The excursion could only be enabled by financial support of the Freunde und Förderer der TU Bergakademie Freiberg e.V., the GDMB Gesellschaft der Metallurgen und Bergleute e.V., the Muldenhütten Recycling und Umwelttechnik GmbH, the SAXONIA Galvanik GmbH, the Andritz Metals GmbH and the visited companies. We thank a lot for this support.
