General Information

The aim of the studies is a diploma which enables the engineer to work in industry, research institutions, in the field of consulting, technical monitoring or service, in the administration or at universities. During the studies the student will be qualified according to the diploma examination regulations. The ability for scientific thinking and working will be communicated. The student will be made familiar with universal and expert knowledge and will learn to solve scientific and technical problems by application of adequate methods.

Precondition is a general qualification for university entrance valid for German universities. The studies can be started both in the summer and in the winter semester. If the studies start in the summer semester a consultation concerning an individual study schedule is obligatory.

Generally ten semesters are needed to complete a course. The basic studies take four semesters and the advanced study period takes six semesters. The basic studies are identical for all fields of the study concerning materials science and materials technology. Therefore the decision for a special field of study has to be made not until the fourth semester, i. e. after the intermediate diploma. The following fields of study can be chosen:

  • Materials science
  • Materials technology
  • Nonferrous metallurgy
  • Steel technology
  • Foundry technology
  • Metal forming

In all cases a practical training in an industrial firm is scheduled for the seventh Semester which will be completed by a paper and a defence.

Nonferrous Metallurgy

This field of study comprises theoretical knowledge, methods and facilities for the production and refining of nonferrous metals including electronic materials such as semiconductor materials. The graduate will get application-oriented knowledge in the fields of thermodynamics, kinetics of metallurgical reactions, modelling of metallurgical processes, metallurgy of materials production, basics of materials science concerning the development and application of metallic materials and their finishing treatment. The education considers the numerous aspects of materials recycling and environmental protection.
