Staff of the IMF

The Institute of Metal Forming is lead by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. E. h. mult. Rudolf Kawalla, who shares the chair with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Prahl. The two professors proceeds the long tradition of research andtraining on metal forming in Freiberg. The institute was establishes in 1928 by Prof. Emicke, who was appointed on the professorship for rolling mill technology and transportation.

The insitute is a part of the faculty for materials science and technology and is one of the strongest third-party-founds at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The focus points of research and development is the influence on the material by metal forming and the interaction between the technology of metal forming and properties in the formed material.

All kinds of metal forming - from forging across slab rolling and wire rolling to numerical simulation of materials and processes - are mapped. Because of this integral point of view, which does not only consider the material and machinery, the development of new, modern forming technologies is possible. Though, the institute accesesa whole bunch of partly unique machines and equipment, which ensures the simulation of a complete process and production technology.
