The Institute for Metal Forming is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Prahl, who was appointed as a Professor of forming technology on October 1, 2017. This continues the long tradition of forming apprenticeship at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which was founded with the appointment of Prof. Emicke to the Chair of Rolling Mill Science and Transportation in 1928.
The institute is integrated into the Faculty of Materials Science & Technology and is one of the largest and most funded institutes at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
The research and teaching focus of the institute is on the influence of forming technology on the material and the interaction between forming technology and property development in the formed material. All areas of forming technology - from forging technology through flat and wire rolling to numerical simulation of materials and processes - are covered.
This holistic approach, which does not only focus on materials or plant engineering, enables the investigation and development of new, modern forming technologies. The Institute of Metal Forming has access to a very extensive and partly unique machine and plant park, which enables the simulation of entire production technologies or partly also entire process chains in a small space.
